This month, I discovered that my class’s math grades are highly polarized. Fifteen percent of the students excel at understanding and solving problems, while the rest are either average or struggling. I hadn’t realized this disparity until March 12, when our teacher finally allowed us to see each other’s marks. Earlier this week, I discussed my plan with my teacher and took the initiative to enhance my class’s overall math performance. She was pleased to have my support not only because it lightened her workload but also because I am the top math student in my grade. I consistently submit my tests first and achieve the highest scores. Moreover, she recognizes that I approach math with my own unique insights, unlike many of my peers.
I shared a preliminary plan with my teacher on how I could assist my classmates. My idea was to identify the students struggling the most and work with them during each math period, helping them grasp the lesson and guiding them through sample problems. At the end of each week, I would provide updates on their progress and occasionally implement targeted training to address common mistakes. However, after I began, I quickly realized that most of them had significant difficulties with basic calculations. This severely hindered their problem solving speed, especially since we are not allowed to use calculators. To address this, I started assigning extra practice, such as completing calculation drills or solving sets of algebraic equations. My strategy proved effective by tracking their calculation speed, I noticed a remarkable improvement. Many students who once struggled have now progressed to an intermediate level.
After completing each unit, I compile a comprehensive summary that encapsulates the key concepts covered. This summary includes an in-depth analysis of various types of questions such as rotational symmetry and plane symmetry in 3D geometry alongside particularly challenging problems and common pitfalls that students frequently encounter. For each problem, I adopt the student’s perspective to break it down thoroughly, explaining my thought process in solving it step by step. I outline why a certain approach is effective, where common misconceptions arise, and how to avoid falling into these traps. For instance, in algebra, I detail why we manipulate equations in specific ways, such as offsetting numbers, to achieve the desired outcome. My goal is to make the reasoning behind each step as clear as possible. Additionally, I share my own strategies for tackling each unit, focusing on more efficient methods and alternative explanations of key definitions. By consolidating these insights into a well structured document, I aim to provide a valuable resource that extends beyond my class. I presented this idea to my teacher, hoping she would share it with our peers and future Grade 7 students so they could avoid similar struggles. After implementing this strategy, I noticed a significant improvement in our class’s overall performance, establishing us as the strongest math class in our grade. Beyond academic contributions, I also assist my teacher with organization, ensuring that reminders, assignments, and feedback are properly managed an area she often overlooks. Compared to previous teacher’s assistants, I believe I have significantly improved the efficiency of these tasks, reinforcing my role as a dependable and proactive support in the classroom.
